Chemonics International produces series of user friendly guides on standards

Standards are the language of trade.  However, this language is often full of jargon and written in a format that few can easily understand.  This holds true especially in the developing world.  In turn emerging market producers are often excluded from international and regional markets. To address this common problem Chemonics International has produced a series of guides to improve the awareness of emerging market value chain actors about standards.

The first guide, Triple Standards, addresses environmental, quality and social standards.  Now in its fourth edition the guide outlines commonly used standards in an accessible language and includes a comparative matrix to help potential certifiers understand the often misunderstood overlaps that exist across multiple certification models.

Beyond the Bean, the second guide in the series and now in its second edition addresses the numerous standards, codes of conduct, and sustainability criteria that have proliferated the coffee supply chain in the last decade.  The guide outlines several of the principal standards and corporate guidelines relevant to coffee.  Translated into French and Spanish, the guide also provides users with background on the common criteria found in most coffee standards.

Published in late 2005, Beyond the Beach connects consumers to the principles of sustainable tourism.  The guide also gives inbound and outbound tourism operators a brief overview of several certification schemes and awards that are well recognized among the numerous programs and awards that exist for the responsible tourism industry.
