Integrating Conformance and Compliance

USAID training links regulatory requirements to market conformance

USAID 's Bureau for Asia and the Near East hosted a four-day training program on the development and application of sound pesticide and food safety management systems and practices in a project life-cycle context in Amman, Jordan in October of 2007.

The four day course targeted the needs of USAID Cognizant Technical Officers, Mission Environmental Officers, and USAID implementing partners. The primary course objective was to improve the awareness and competence for the design and implementation of agriculture and agribusiness projects so that they conform to regulatory requirements and meet market-based food safety and environment standards. Through a combination of field exercises and presentations participants gained knowledge and expertise in the following areas:

  • Regulatory compliance and market conformity in agriculture and agribusiness projects throughout project design, implementation, and evaluation
  • Pesticide use, management, and disposal
  • Pesticide evaluation review and special use action plan
  • Agribusiness worker health and safety
  • Voluntary environmental, food safety, and social standards
  • Environmental management systems
