Creating standards for the marine aquarium trade

The chain of custody from "reef to retail"

This article discusses the creation of standards for the marine aquarium trade. The international MAC (Marine Aquarium Council) standards cover the chain of custody from “reef to retail.” In November 2001 the following four MAC standards were launched: 1) Ecosystem and Fishery Management (EFM) Standard

2) The Collection, Fishing and Handling (CFH) Standard

3) Handling, Husbandry and Transport (HHT) Standard

4) Mariculture and Aquaculture Management (MAM) Standard.

For a marine ornamental to be sold as MAC certified it must pass through an unbroken chain of custody which begins with a MAC certified collection area and ends with a MAC certified retailer.  For further information on MAC please visit thier website at http://www.aquariumcouncil.org/index.html.
