Exporting high-value vegetables from Tanzania

The 26th installment of the Linking Small Firms to Competitive Strategies Breakfast Seminar Series focused on the future of Tanzania's high-value export sub-sector. The presentation discussed the findings of an end-market study that assessed the viability of Tanzania as an exporter of high-value vegetables, in a context where Kenya has set the benchmark. The  EU market was identified as the main potential market for the Tanzanian vegetables (snow peas, sugar snap peas, French green beans, mangetouts, carrots, corn, leeks, zucchini, eggplant, patty pan squash). Five EU market trends were highlighted, which suggested that market opportunities do exist. However, there remain many challenges, such as the changing procurement strategies by specialized wholesalers and the compliance with standards.  The presentation also addressed the strengths and weaknesses of the Tanzanian horticulture sub-sector as perceived by the leading importers in key markets and provided strategic options for increased market penetration. The full presenation can be accessed below:
