Kraft Foods will use Rainforest Alliance Certification for its chocolate lines in Côte d’Or and Marabou
30,000 tons of Rainforest Alliance certified beans planned by the end of 2012
Kraft Foods has announced it will use cocoa beans only from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms across two of its lines, Côte d’Or and Marabou. This amounts to some 30,000 tons of beans by the end of 2012.
Pascal Bourdin, senior vice president of Kraft Foods and general manager of its European chocolate business says "Côte d'Or and Marabou are two of our premium chocolate brands. By using certified cocoa, we can continue to offer the most intense chocolate pleasure to our consumers while improving the lives of cocoa farmers and helping secure high-quality cocoa for the longer term."
The cooperation between Rainforest Alliance and Kraft Foods started in 2005 in the Côte d'Ivoire. The mainstream chocolate products in Europe will be available in France and Belgium. The Côte d'Or premium dark chocolate currently contains at least 30 percent cocoa from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms in Cote d'Ivoire, Ecuador and Dominican Republic.
During 2009 the products should enter markets in the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Hungary, Poland, Portugal, the Netherlands, Canada and the United States. They will also be available in Sweden, Denmark and Finland under the Marabou brand; and under the Suchard brand in Austria and Switzerland.
