Autumn 2009 marked the 10-year anniversary of the Institute for Food and Agricultural Standards (IFAS). The 2010-15 Mission for the new Center for the Study of Standards in Society (CS3) builds upon and expands IFAS’ focus on fostering and promoting engaged interdisciplinary research, education, and outreach related to democratic decision-making in standards setting, modification, and enforcement by including but not limiting its scope to food and agriculture. In so doing CS3 continues to advance MSU ’s international reputation as an interdisciplinary hub for engaged scholarship on standards writ large. This expanded vision and associated activities, as well as the global proliferation of standards for people, processes, products, and practices provides the impetus for IFAS’ name change to the CS3.
