CIRAD (the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development) has a mandate to "contribute to rural development in tropical and subtropical countries through research, experimentation, training operations in France and overseas, and scientific and technical information, primarily in the fields of agriculture, forestry and agrifoods".
This mandate has broadened to include environmental issues and natural resource management, and also involves CIRAD in drawing up public development aid policy.
