Building community and household resilience to food insecurity
Objective: The Multi-Year Activity Program - Title II builds community and household resilience to food insecurity through agricultural assistance and institutional development of local NGOs. Obj. 1. To increase the availability of food through enhanced agricultural productivity and production. 2.To increase access to food (increased incomes) through improved technical skills and enhancedagricultural marketing.3. To strengthen the capacity of local organizations to carry out food security interventions at the community level. - Since start-up in October 2005, TechnoServe has identified over 4,300 farmers belonging to 121 groups for participation in program activities. Training on group dynamics and group governance has begun as well as agricultural extension activities. 4 demonstration plots on shallots and garlic and 8 on maize and cowpea have been established. TechnoServe, in collaboration with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, have identified farmers that will serve as volunteer extensionists in their communities. Initial preparations have also been made to provide loan guarantees to rural banks to encourage them to increase lending activities to assisted farmers groups.
