Revitalizing the poultry sector in Mozambique

Objective: Monetize 11,120 metric tons of USDA donated wheat and use the proceeds from these sales to revitalize the poultry industry in Mozambique through the following activities: • Capacity Building for Farmers through technical assistance and training • Capacity Building for Large-Scale Producers • Bio-security and Disease Prevention Training • Marketing Services • Capacity Building for Government Ministries Results: In addition to creating relationships with key players in the poultry industry in Mozambique, TechnoServe has been instrumental in organizing a national poultry association. This group will focus on better market representation for the industry, improve market competitiveness, and provide a platform for the poultry industry to discuss concerns about the overall direction of the industry. TechnoServe also worked with the Ministry of Agriculture to put in place legislation that will prevent dumping of expired product into Mozambique, creating more interest in the expansion of the poultry market and ensuring that an individual who invests in the poultry market can make a profit.
