Developing high and low value supply chains in Ghana

Under a USAID contract Chemonics is working to increase the competitiveness of Ghana’s private sector in world markets through an improved enabling environment and an improved responsiveness to market demands. The Trade and Investment Program for a Competitive Export Economy (TIPCEE) works at four major levels of the horticulture supply chain -- smallholder farmer, nucleus firm, industry and market -- to help businesses identify and respond to markets (regional and international), source material locally (especially from small farmers) and introduce new technologies to make products more competitive. TIPCEE has developed improved production practices and information systems designed to increase smallholder access to markets for high value export commodities including mango and pinapple. The project also works closely with the Ghanaian Bureau of Product Standards to improve their understanding and applicability of international food safety and environmental standards in addition to developing a national equivalncy standard to EurepGAP.
