Accelerating the growth of agricultural sectors
Under thePromoting Pro-Poor Opportunities through Commodity and Service Markets (PrOpCom) project Chemonics is working to accelerate growth in agriculture and associated sectors, thereby improving incomes and livelihoods of the poor. To date, the project has selected five commodities to support: rice soybeans, rice, cassava, and cashews. These commodity chains were chosen because of potential for both a significant reduction in poverty and sustained systemic change on the institutional and operational levels. The project will support two of these commodities — rice and soy — until DfID’s Phase I evaluation (in September 2007) of the project. The project has four main outputs: -- to improve the enabling environment -- to enhance input markets to improve productivity -- to increase growth and value added in commodity output markets that provide pro-poor opportunities -- to collect and disseminate lessons learned
