Raising productivity and incomes through sustainable use of natural resources
In parts of Mexico, acute poverty often leads to inefficient use of resources, which amplifies environmental pressures in regions of high biological diversity and fragile ecological stability. Through the Rural Prosperity and Conservation Project Chemonics works to treat both issues by building capacities that raise productivity and incomes without misusing natural resources. The project works with producer organizations that improve harvest quality and yields, benefiting nearly 4,500 producers of coffee and cacao. Through this project, Chemonics also supports the National Protected Areas Commission’s development of an ecotourism policy for 8.6 million hectares encompassing the national protected areas system. To date, the project’s cost-sharing strategy leverages $1.20 of funding for every project dollar invested.
