Assisting the control of mycotoxins in South Africa

FAO /AGNS commenced work on an FAO TCP project in early 2006 to assist in the control of mycotoxins in South Africa. The objective of the project is to carry out a preliminary assessment of the level of contamination by mycotoxins (mainly OTA and DON in selected commodities) and to enhance the government's capabilities in the sampling, monitoring, prevention and control of mycotoxins in foodstuffs with a view to ensure maximum consumer protection and promote international trade in foodstuffs. The proposed activities are currently centred on data generation and analysis, with a view to improve monitoring and control activities, perform scientific based risk assessment with local data, as well as to feed in the network of information exchange in SADC countries.
