Promoting internal control systems for farmer group certification under GlobalGAP Option 2
Farmers can achieve EUREPGAP certification as an individual (option 1) or as a member of a farmer group (option 2). Option 2 is also known in other schemes (e.g. organic agriculture) as group certification. Under option 2, it is the farmer group instead of the individual farmer that legally owns the produce sold, guarantees compliance with the EUREPGAP standard, applies for certification and holds the certificate. A key element in group certification is a documented quality management system. A template of a Quality Manual including operating procedures and recording forms has been elaborated that can be taken by producer associations as a starting point to create their own documents, adapting contents according to the situation of their farmers and the specific circumstances within their groups. A first draft of the manual is currently being tested in Africa, Asia and South east Europe. On the basis of the lessons learned in this trial phase, a completed and improved final version will be made available to a broader audience as public shareware.
