Milieu Programma Sierteelt ( MPS ) (or Floriculture Environment Project) has been established by the Dutch floricultural sector with support from the flower auctions and several flower trading organizations. MPS ' standards focus on environmental, social and quality aspects and are applicable to growers, traders and florists all over the world. Presently, over 50 countries from across the world have linked up to the program. MPS offers certification services for several schemes. The most important standard is the environmental standard MPS -ABC, which is an environmental score card that shows the performance of the company with regard to reduction of the use of fertilizers, energy and waste. Furthermore, MPS included social standards for the flower sector as well, such as health and safety issues and labor conditions, into the MPS -Socially Qualified certificate. MPS -Quality is the standard for quality care with branch-specific requirements for horticulture.
MPS ' labels are business-to-business labels and have gained substantial ground as recognized standards covering sustainability aspects in the international flower trade. Dutch MPS growers together produce 70% of the Dutch turnover at the flower auctions. Worldwide the number of MPS certified companies is increasing, as sustainability becomes more and more important. Swiss retailer Migros e.g. only imports flowers bearing the MPS - A label and there are a number of supermarkets worldwide that follow that example. Beside the certificates for floriculture growers, MPS also offers a label for the trade ( MPS -Florimark Trade) and for auction houses ( MPS -Florimark Auction).
